They are various types and categories of plans.They can be categorised based on
1. Duration
2. Functional use of the plan
3. Scope of the plan
Types of plans include
(a) short and long ranged plan
(b) routine and special plan
(c) definite and contingent plan
Short and long ranged plans:
Short range plans are called tactical or operational plan,they are used by the management and concerned with specifying how tasks are to be carried out effectively and efficiently.They normally spread over a period of one year. while long range plan are known as strategic plans normally extending over a period of five years,they focus on the organisation as a whole on its direction and future goals
Routine and special plans: This are plans that are on a routine,i.e,they occur repeatedly and are directed to specific problems.They are concerned with the daily activities of an organisation,they are also called cyclical plans.while special plans are non recurring plan set up for a particular purpose,they are unique because each is fundamentally different from the other
Definite and contingent plans: definite plans are plans that carry somewhat a guarantee that they shall be implemented while contingent plans are plans whose implementation depends on the occurrence of certain anticipated events.
